Maths Teacher Summer School 2017 -

Manchester - Wednesday 26th July

Central London - Thursday 27th July

A day full of ideas and activities to improve attainment at KS3 and KS4

This Summer School offers you the opportunity to work in small groups, to evaluate activities and to adapt them for use in your own classroom.  We'll look at ways of fostering independent learning, encouraging collaboration, improving problem-solving and so increasing achievement and attainment.  And there will be plenty of resources to prepare for the new academic year.

You build your own agenda - choose from a series of practical, topic-based workshops:

  1. problem-solving
  2. fractions and percentages
  3. algebra
  4. ratio and proportion
  5. kinematics
  6. geometry

Each of the workshops is designed to allow you the time to properly examine new and 'tried-and-tested' activities, working with other teachers and planning how to use the resources back in the classroom.

There will also be a series of practical maths activity stations set up for you to visit, and a display of old and new maths activity text books, giving ideas and suggestions for new approaches to key topics.

Delegates will be encouraged to bring along resource and activity suggestions of their own to share, and the emphasis will be on group work and evaluation of materials.

Each attendee will receive a CD with copies of the resources.

The fee for the day is £95, which includes all resources, lunch and refreshments.

Designed by teacher for teachers

Over 5,000 teachers have attended previous BMAM events, and as ever this agenda has been researched in detail with maths teachers from schools across the country.  This feedback highlighted areas of concern, the topics these events will concentrate on, focusing on problem-solving across the maths curriculum, both for KS3 and GCSE pupils, as they prepare for assessment

Tested and proven resources

We’ll explore rich tasks designed to encourage pupils to tackle harder questions, develop disciplined thinking skills and so build motivation and attainment.  There will be time to try out and adapt lots of activities, and time to talk to other maths teachers and you’ll receive a CD with a copy of all the materials to take back to school.

Working together, sharing experiences

You’ll work in pairs or small groups; trying out the activities, concocting and testing new teaching ideas together.  You’ll be able to adapt resources for across different ability levels, from extending the brightest pupils to making Foundation level material more accessible to lower ability students.  As one teacher wrote of a course recently ‘lifting my head from my daily routine’.  And another ‘the best course I’ve been on in twenty years

The registration fee has been set to offer good value for money as well as a great maths experience for you; the cost of attending is £95 per person, including all resources, documentation, a CD of all materials, lunch and refreshments.
